FEB. 9, 2021
This session explores the evolution of hip-hop culture in the centuries-long fight for social justice and human rights in the United States and connects hip-hop culture’s evolution to other genres of music. Open to Austin Peay State University students, faculty and staff with registration.

In this session, Dr. Winfrey explains the Hip-Hop Empowerment Model, which is the foundation of the H.Y.P.E. Hip-Hop Therapy Curriculum. We will explore the elements of hip-hop from its history, to its culture, to the Hip-Hop Declaration of Peace and then discuss the tenets of the Hip-Hop Empowerment Model, with examples of how it can be integrated into teaching. This is an interactive presentation that also offers practical steps for utilizing hip-hop culture in most classrooms.

At the end, Dr. Winfrey will answer questions from participants. To submit questions before the workshop, go to www.apsu.co1.qualtrics.com. Please limit questions to topics of music, hip-hop music or culture, pedagogy or social justice.
